At Endau-Rompin Johor National Park, the concept of getting away from it all takes on a whole new meaning .

The park is managed by the Johor National Parks Corporation, and encompasses some 49, 000ha of virgin lowland tropical rainforest.

Imagine trekking through isolation for centuries. The abundant vegetation is a magnet for creatures great and small, and the sheer beauty of the landscape takes your breath away.

Wake up in the morning to be greeted by the timeless sounds of the forest – the hoot of the gibbons, the love call of the hornbills, the chorus of the cicadas. As darkness falls, the mood becomes languid and mysterious, and nature’s symphony takes on a whole new tune.

This is one of the few places left in the country where the wild denizens of the mighty jungle roam free. They includes no less than 230 species of birds, 179 species of butterflies and all the great Malaysian mammals – the tiger, the elephant, the tapir and the Sumatran rhinoceros, as well as a host of other animals – from the agile Dusky – Leaf Monkey clowning in the tree – tops, to the indigenous fish at Tasik Air Biru, which are so tame they feed off your hand.

For those who cannot live without the modern must-haves, there are furnished chalets, piped water and a cafeteria at the main visitor’s Complex in Peta to ensure a comfortable stay.

But why cofine yourself to a room when you can rediscover the exhilaration of kayaking down a roiling river, or wade through streams so pristine you can gather the water in your hands to quench your thirst. Or just sit back, close your eyes and enjoy a quiet communion with nature.

Spend a night at Endau-Rompin Johor National Parks, and you will understand why explorers and naturalist alike have been lured here since 19th century to uncover the secret of this mist-shrouded jewel. Spend two night, and you will be hooked forever. For the forest never sleeps.

Friendly Tips

Upon a confirmed booking, you will be provided with a list of things to bring with you. In a rain forest, comfort is a priority. The weather is usually hot and humid, with a chance of rain, while the nights can be quite cool. Conditions vary with the time of year. Rainfall is heaviest between October and January.

Temperatures range between 25C and 32C. The rainy season between December and January often renders the park inaccessible. Always check with the park authorities beforehand before making your way in.
